A Cozy Fall Engagement Session at the Calgary Farmyard

There’s just something magical about fall—the crisp air, the golden leaves, and, of course, pumpkin season! When Candice and John told me they wanted to do their engagement session at Calgary Farmyard, I was instantly thrilled. I mean, how could I not be? The farmyard in autumn is an absolute dream, and I knew we were in for some seriously stunning (and fun!) photos.

The Not-So-Mazy Corn Maze

We started our session in the corn maze… or, well, what was left of the corn maze. By the time fall is in full swing, most of the corn has been harvested, leaving behind stalks that are more of a backdrop than an actual maze. But that didn’t stop us from making the most of it! The golden hues of the dried corn paired perfectly with the cozy autumn vibes Candice and John were hoping for. Plus, it gave us the perfect excuse to focus on the real star of the show—the Calgary Farmyard pumpkin patch.

The Pumpkin Patch Magic

The pumpkin patch was where the session came to life. The bright pops of orange from the pumpkins added gorgeous contrast to the photos, making Candice and John’s love shine even more colourful. We had fun incorporating the pumpkins into the shoot, even using one as the perfect backdrop for a close-up macro shot of Candice’s engagement ring. (Seriously, pumpkin-ring shots might be my new favourite thing!)

A Goat Guest Star

Now, I’ve worked with plenty of couples who bring their dogs to their engagement sessions, but incorporating an animal from the petting zoo? That was a new one for me. I’ll be honest—I wasn’t quite sure how to make it work at first. Unlike well-trained pups, these animals have their own agenda! But I went with one of my go-to shots: placing the animal in the foreground while Candice and John snuggled in the background, slightly out of focus. Let’s say that seeing a goat as the unexpected third wheel in an engagement session was hilarious—and definitely made for some unique photos!

Navigating the Calgary Farmyard Crowds

One of the challenges of shooting at a popular location like Calgary Farmyard is the number of people enjoying the space. It was a busy day, so I had to be extra mindful of my surroundings, positioning Candice and John in ways that kept other visitors out of the background. It took some creative angles and a little patience, but in the end, we got beautifully intimate shots that made it look like they had the whole farmyard to themselves.
