If you are searching for a Calgary Zoo wedding venue review, you are probably trying to figure out what getting married there is actually like beyond what you see online. I photographed 4 out of my many weddings in 2025 at the Calgary Zoo, and I have lived just five minutes away from it my entire life. I know this venue both professionally and personally, which gives me a very realistic perspective.
The Calgary Zoo is one of the most unique wedding venues in the city. It also works best when couples understand both the benefits and the limitations ahead of time. Below is my honest review from a photographer’s point of view.
What I Love About the Calgary Zoo Wedding Venue
So many beautiful photo locations
One of the biggest reasons couples choose the Calgary Zoo wedding venue is variety. The gardens and conservatory are obvious favourites, but they are only the beginning. Prehistoric Park, shaded pathways, bridges, and quieter corners throughout the zoo all make beautiful photo locations.
From a photographer’s perspective, no two Calgary Zoo weddings ever look the same.

Fun and unique photo opportunities
Being able to include animals in the background of your wedding photos is something you simply cannot get anywhere else in Calgary. These images always feel fun and personal, and they often end up being favourites in a couple’s final gallery.

Guests can explore during cocktail hour
Guest admission to the zoo is included, which means cocktail hour feels more like an experience. Guests can walk around, explore exhibits, and enjoy the zoo instead of standing around waiting for dinner.
The food is consistently great
Zoo catering is always impressive. The food is well prepared and consistently enjoyed by guests. I have never photographed a Calgary Zoo wedding where dinner was disappointing.

Better availability thanks to multiple venues
Because the zoo has multiple event spaces, they are able to host more than one wedding per day. From a planning perspective, this often makes it easier to secure your preferred date compared to venues with only one space available.

Helpful on-site event coordinators
You will work with one of the zoo’s event coordinators throughout the planning process. They are great at answering questions and helping with logistics. That said, having your own hired wedding coordinator still makes a huge difference on the wedding day itself.
Everything can happen in one location
Your ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour, and reception can all take place at the zoo. Not having to travel between venues keeps the day flowing smoothly and reduces stress for both you and your guests.

Gardens are closed during ceremonies
Zoo staff close the gardens during wedding ceremonies so the public is not walking through your space. This helps the ceremony feel much more intentional than many couples expect from a public venue.
Things to Consider Before Choosing the Calgary Zoo
There is no getting ready space on-site
One important thing to note is that there is no getting ready location at the zoo itself. You will need to get ready off-site before arriving for your ceremony. Many couples choose a nearby hotel or Airbnb, which works well, but it is something you will want to factor into your timeline and transportation planning.

It can be very busy
The zoo is a public space and can be especially busy on warm days. Most people are respectful when they see a wedding happening, but you cannot expect to hold a photo location for long periods of time. This is particularly noticeable indoors where space is more limited.
It’s not 100% private
Even when the gardens are closed during your ceremony, people can still watch from a distance. For couples who value a very private ceremony, this can feel uncomfortable, even if it is not disruptive.
Photo locations may be shared with other weddings
Multiple weddings per day can be a positive and a challenge. I once photographed a wedding where another ceremony ran longer than expected. While taking family photos, we had to be very quiet to avoid disturbing them.
It was also a hot day, and shade was limited. Keeping everyone comfortable meant using only a few shaded spots and being mindful of noise while the other ceremony finished. This is not a bad thing, but it is something couples should be aware of ahead of time.
The photos below were all taken right beside each other; while I photographed the bridal party my second shooter was right beside me capturing the groomsmen. We had to work together in the limited space we had to get our shots without capturing each other in the background.

Some areas may close unexpectedly
Occasionally, parts of the zoo close without warning. I have had couples walk all the way to a specific photo location only to find it closed for the day. Having backup photo locations is important here.

Parking and accessibility need planning
The main public parking lot is on the opposite side of the zoo from the wedding venues. The zoo will reserve a few closer parking spots for the couple and vendors, but guests with mobility concerns should plan ahead for the walking distance.
The zoo is large and timing matters
Walking between photo locations takes longer than many couples expect. Comfortable shoes are essential. Because the zoo has specific ceremony times and closes to the public, many couples benefit from doing a first look and portraits before the ceremony.
Who the Calgary Zoo Wedding Venue Is Best For
The Calgary Zoo is a great fit if you:
- Want a non-traditional wedding experience
- Love nature, animals, and variety in your photos
- Are comfortable being in a public setting
- Want guests entertained during cocktail hour
- Are flexible and open to adapting throughout the day
Who It May Not Be the Best Fit For
You may want to consider another venue if you:
- Want complete privacy
- Prefer a quiet, controlled environment
- Want exclusive access to photo locations
- Have many guests with mobility challenges
- Want an on-site getting ready space
- Want to spend long periods of time in one photo spot
Final Thoughts from a Calgary Wedding Photographer
There is a reason the Calgary Zoo wedding venue is so popular. It is fun, beautiful, and full of personality. It works best for couples who understand the logistics and plan their day with those details in mind.
When couples go in with realistic expectations, Calgary Zoo weddings end up being some of the most memorable days I photograph.
